Portable Music

Nowadays, when you go walking or commuting you’ll always see people with earphones stuck in their ears. With the advent of cellphones with radios or MP3 players, more and more people are walking around lost in their own world. There’s nothing wrong with listening to music while traveling, I’m guilty of such pleasure especially if it’s a long travel, but for short distances or while walking on the streets, I thinks it’s kind of hazardous. One may get so caught up with listening and become lost to what is happening around that he/she might get into an accident. Of course there are also the dangers of hold-uppers and snatchers on the lookout to make a quick buck. Cellphones, MP3 players, Ipods, and PSPs are very easy to fence so owners should be careful in using such gadgets in public.

Insurance

Last night my insurance agent dropped by to have me sign some forms and sell me variable insurance. She was very convincing so I said, “Why not?” She explained that I only had to pay P10k a year and the insurance company will invest my money. I asked some questions and signed the papers. What I forgot to do was ask her if their company offered travel insurance. I was thinking if I might need such insurance for my almost one year sojourn to Seoul next year. However, it would also be too late for me to get one because of the long holiday and I’ll be leaving before the holiday ends. I guess I’ll just double on my prayer insurance to get me safely through that one year.

Pets

I would like to have a pet, a cat and a dog one of these days. Unfortunately, our house is so small that we do not have room for pets. When I was in highschool we used to have a pet cat to keep at bay the mice population. It was the first and last time I ever had a pet.

Before, pets were not really pets but working animals. They guard the houses, keep pests at bay or in the countrysides these animals worked the farms or served as food during special occasions. However, in the last decade I have seen how Filipinos have started adapting the Western way of treating animals as members of the family. The mushrooming of pet stores and veterinary clinics around the city is an indication of this shift in Filipino attitude towards their pets. Pet owners now invest in pet supplies such pet food where previously the owners just give their pets their leftovers. Pets also have their own toys and grooming materials already. There are even grooming parlors just for pets.

I guess owning a pet nowadays is really quite expensive. Aside from the supplies, you also have to set aside money for vaccines, vitamins, and visits to the pet doctor. It’s like raising a child.

Watching the news in the past few months, we’ve seen a lot of news regarding traffic accidents involving buses, motorcycles, cars, etc. It has come to a point wherein some people have speculated that in the near future, vehicular accidents will become the major cause of death in the country.

Aside from tragic accidents, there are those minor accidents that occur more frequently because of offensive driving and reckless imprudence. It is nice to be protected from such occurrences through auto insurance. If you become involved in minor accidents wherein you car suffers from crumpled bumper or front part or a dent in the door, with a good insurance you won’t have to shoulder the cause of repairs. For more information on auto insurance FAQ, the internet is a great source.

There’s a retired teacher that comes to our office to sell fancy jewelry. I call her Tita Mila. Her pieces are very nice and not so common. Every time she comes she manages to sell me something until I finally told her jokingly that we’re at war so that I won’t look at her pieces. It’s really hard for me not buy something whenever she shows me nice pieces. She’s very good at convincing me that this pair of earrings looks good on me, the bracelet is a very good buy, and the ring fits my finger very nicely. In fairness, she’s usually right. Good thing I’ve become so busy with work lately that I don’t have time to entertain her.

Light Flow

Going to the office was very relaxing today. Flow of traffic was very light. For the first time since December started we were able to get to the office before 7:30am, just like before. Light traffic was due to the holiday of Catholic schools who celebrated the Immaculate Concepcion of Mother Mary. Since there are many Catholic schools along Katipunan there was really a big cut down on the volume of vehicle earlier today. Of course, tomorrow is another story. I expect we will be experiencing bumper to bumper traffic again tomorrow. I can’t wait for school vacation for Christmas to start.

TV Lifts

When we first moved to our new house we bought new furniture. One of the furniture we bought was a tv lift for our small TV. It could fit our TV and the antenna with room to spare. However, a few months later we bought a larger TV without considering the dimensions of our tv lift. When we placed our new tv on it, it hardly fit. We had to get cable because it could not accommodate our antenna making it impossible for us to view any shows. I guess the lesson here is that when buying furniture like tv lifts, one should look ahead to the possibility that in the near future you might be buying a bigger tv.
