Safety First

Construction work is one of the most hazardous jobs. Construction workers handle heavy equipment and materials. Depending on the project, they may be assigned to work on the 60th floor of a high rise building or build a flyover or bridge with just a safety belt and narrow scaffolding that keeps them from falling to their deaths. Before, construction companies were not so concerned with investing in safety equipment for their workers. There were a lot of accidents in work sites that resulted in severe disabilities to death for some of their workers. The advent of regulations and standardization bodies have cut down considerably on work related accidents because companies are more conscious of the safety of their workers and pedestrians affected by the company’s projects. Nowadays, construction companies strive for zero accidents in their construction sites and put up protective barriers to minimize accidents caused by falling debris to passersby.

This morning I was up earlier than usual. I wanted to be at the office by 7am. It was raining when I left the house. It’s very hard for me when it’s raining because I have to get tissue for my running nose while holding a wet umbrella. Anyway, when I got off Ligaya I saw a perfect rainbow arc. It was like a colorful bridge arcing over the sky. I stopped for a few seconds to admire it. I really wished I brought my camera with me. I also saw another rainbow on my way home but it was not as perfect as this morning’s.

MBT shoes are a revolutionary concept based on the theory that the instability of soft ground alleviates backache. Swiss engineer Karl Müller invented the Massai Barefoot Technology to make soft natural ground available to people who have to walk on hard surfaces. The specialized sole is what differentiates MBT from other shoes. The sole makes it possible to feel like your walking on a sandy beach or mossy ground and it gives that natural instability that increases muscle activity. By just wearing MBT shoes your body is exercised already.

Yesterday I was doing my best not to be late for work. Fate was smiling at me. Commuting was a breeze. I immediately flagged down an almost empty Megamall FX and did not wait for a Quiapo jeepney just to be sure I will be able to get to work early. Since traffic was smooth we arrived at Tektite with 20 minutes to spare. I was debating whether to walk the distance from Tektite to our office (around 10 minutes walk) or stay in the FX as it wound its way around Megamall and getting off at Medical Plaze, which is nearer our office. I decided to walk because I was afraid that the FX would get caught in traffic somewhere along the route and I did not relish being the last to get off, which is often the case. When I got off the FX I looked at its plate number to see if I will encounter in my walk. Sure enough, when I got to Medical Plaza I saw it stop in front of me while a passenger got off. Waaahhh. I could have saved myself the trouble of walking, on the other hand, it was a much needed exercise. At least I was not late for work.

One night in Busan, while walking back to the international house after dinner from one of the restaurants that honor our meal coupons, we encountered this heavily muscled guy. He looked like he invested in home gym equipment. He was wearing black-fitting sando to show off his big body. My companions remarked that the guy was gay and hiding behind a muscled physique. I do not know how they came to this conclusion but maybe it was the way he strutted while walking, like he was saying, “hey! look at my body”. I cannot really say for certain if he was gay or not. Besides, it was really none of our business. It was just unfortunate for him that he encountered us. Hehe

While waiting for an FX the other day, I saw this FX signboard:

Pasig
Palengke
Tiktite

Then earlier, while strolling inside Megamall on my way to David’s for Rever for a haircut, I saw this inside one of the stores/offices there:

Loss weight safely.

Saw this signage while playing tourist in Ilocos Sur last May:

Uniform

I was deep in thought while walking home earlier when I suddenly heard a voice asking, “Are you a teacher?” I turned and saw an old woman walking beside me. “What?,” I asked her. She said, “What school is that uniform?”, nodding to the green monstrosity I was wearing. I answered her that I was not a teacher but worked for a government agency. She said something else but I did not hear it and the old woman walked on ahead of me. I was still laughing inside at her comment when I heard a commotion at my back. When I looked back I saw two boys riding bicycles. Suddenly, I heard one of the boys say, “Careful, you’ll hit the teacher.” The other boy seconded, “Yes, don’t hit the teacher.” Waaahhh! Why can’t we have fashionable uniforms?

I get irritated when I see couples walking together HHWW (holding hands while walking), being very sweet and all, making gooey eyes on each other, but with the girl/woman on the danger side of the road. Don’t guys know that they should be the ones on the side nearest the street? Is the instinct to protect their mate just history? Was this instinct stifled by women’s lib? That women can take care of themselves and that they don’t need men’s protection? Sure, I believe in equality of the sexes but by doing something so little as walking nearest the side of the street when they’re together or when they’re crossing, men can show their partners just how much they care and value them. On the other hand, women have as much right to protect their men, so maybe they choose to walk on the danger side to show how much they care and value their men. Or maybe, these couples just don’t know any better. Hehehe

What do you think?

I was walking along Aurora Boulevard to the tricycle terminal just off Broadway when I passed by a store that sells finger foods like kikiam, siomai, fish and squid balls. Guess what the name of the store was? “Kik Mai Bols”. Hahaha. I just managed to stifle my laughter when I read the name. I bet it was a guy who came up with the name.

I was walking along Pearl Drive when I saw this foreigner. I’m not quite sure about her nationality but I think she was Asian. She had long curly brown hair, slim, very white and flawless, wearing a short gray t-shirt dress with flouncy hem. She was walking rather swiftly making the hem of her dress bounce. Men can’t help but stare. Suddenly, I saw the bottom part of her dress lift to her waist for a second or two, showing what was underneath. Since I was way behind, I can’t quite make out what it was. I’m not quite sure if she became aware of this because she just kept walking on, without a break to her stride. The reason why her skirt lifted was because she passed by the area where air from the building’s ventilation was quite strong. So for ladies wearing short skirts or dresses, beware of that area near the Mini Stop along Pearl Drive.
