Na ang sinaunang Olympics ay ginanap sa Greece noong walong siglo BC hanggang limang siglo AD. Samantala, ang Olympics na alam natin ngayon ay nagsimula nung 1894 nung binuo ni Baron Pierre de Coubertin ang International Olympic Committee (IOC). Nagkaroon ng unang palaro ang modern Olympics sa Athens noong 1896.
Ginanap sa Seoul, Korea ang ika-dalawampu’t apat na palaro habang sa Beijing, China naman ang ika-dalawampu’t siyam na palaro.
