We were riding the subway on our way home from dinner last Friday when I pointed to this girl in the seat in front of me. I told my friends that if I were a guy, I’d go for her. It was a continuation of an earlier conversation. They looked at her and did not agree. As we were nearing Itaewon, the girl suddenly produced what looked like a deodorant spray and sprayed the vicinity of her friend’s armpits before spraying her armpits also. I was shocked because I always thought that putting on deodorant should be done in private (like the restroom inside the subway station and not inside the train itself). My friends turned to me and asked, “Is she still your type? Major turn-off!’ Hehehe.

Samantala, ang Olympics na alam natin ngayon ay nagsimula nung 1894 nung binuo ni Baron Pierre de Coubertin ang International Olympic Committee (IOC). Nagkaroon ng unang palaro ang modern Olympics sa Athens noong 1896.

Ginanap sa Seoul, Korea ang ika-dalawampu’t apat na palaro habang sa Beijing, China naman ang ika-dalawampu’t siyam na palaro.

(The Ancient Olympics were held in Greece during the 8th century BC until the 5th Century AD. On the other hand, the modern Olympics started in 1894 when Baron Pierre de Coubertin established the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The first modern Olympic games were held in Athens in 1896.

Nakakatuwa sa Beijing kasi nakikita mo ang mga tao na naglalaro sa mga parke. Hindi lang ang mga bata kundi pati mga magulang nila at mga may edad na ay tuwang tuwa sa paglalaro ng sipa at pagpapalipad ng saranggola. Pagnakikita mo silang naglalaro akala mo ang dadali-daling gawin pero pag ginawa mo na, mahirap pala.

(In the parks in Beijing, it is enjoyable to see people playing. Not only the children but also their parents and even older people look happy kicking an object with feathers and flying kites. When you see them playing, you’ll think that it is very easing to do but when you try it out, it’s quite difficult to do.)

It was winter when we arrived here in Seoul. After just a couple of days, we noticed that our skin became very dry and that the face and body lotions we brought cannot seem to do their work properly. So, Evi, who had been in Korea for a year already, brought us to a shop that sells skin care products. She pointed out a milk cream for our face. We bought and tried it out and it really worked. I even recommended it to the other international students who were complaining about their dry skin. However, now that summer is almost here, I stopped using. I will just resume using the cream come the fall or winter season.

Here in Seoul, the women are usually slim, especially the young women. It is not that common to see a chubby Korean woman. I do not know if it is because they walk a lot, thus burn the fats or maybe they know the secret of the best diet pill. But one Korean man said that women usually just toy with their food or they eat very little. He even demonstrated how they cut their food, even a pea, into very little pieces before eating them. Maybe he was just joking and next time we have a class dinner, I will be more observant.

Drug problem has become very pervasive in a lot of countries around the world particularly in developing nations. The Colombo Plan, a regional inter-governmental organization, recognized many of their member countries are facing multi-faceted problems due to illegal drug production. That is why Drug Advisory Program (DAP) is one of their four permanent programs. Since its inception, DAP has launched on several innovative strategies including faith-based approach in drug demand reduction, drug rehab and treatment. It has also established outreach and drop in centres and introduced life skills to youth. DAP has also formed linkages with government agencies of their member countries to help find solutions to this perennial problem. DAP hopes that through its activities and linkages with other agencies, it will be able to help reduce the drug problems in its member countries.
